Museum Photos

Wisconsin Bowhunting Heritage Foundation, Inc.

The display case that houses the first killed deer taken in the State of Wisconsin as a sport was made and donated to the museum by Lloyd Lechner of Mayville. Roy Case killed the deer on December 6, 1930 in Vilas County. Roy coined the phrase “bowhunter”. Thanks to the efforts of Roy, along with others, a separate bowhunting season was established in 1934 and Wisconsin became the first state in the country to hold an archery–only deer hunt. Separate bow and gun deer hunting licenses began in 1965. Some special visitors throughout the day included (left to right) WBH President Wright Allen, WBH Secretary Warren DeSmidt, WBH members Stan & Carolyn Godfrey of Fountain City, and museum Board President Brian Tessmann of Waukesha. Betty & Pat Wicker of Clintonville, pose before the broadhead display of Pat's, on loan to the museum.

Sponsorship plaques for donors were available for pickup by those members and people that made donations. Lloyd Lechner (left) made the display case for the deerhead. Brian Tessmann (kneeling) of Waukesha, is the current president of the museum. Kaleb Case also poses in the picture. Kaleb Case poses with Herb Behnke, retired member of the Natural Resources Board.

The WBH Honor Roll has a rich heritage and has been a long time favorite of WBH members. The late John Schoenike, of Clintonville, and a Charter Member of WBH, made the Honor Roll display and maintained it for as long as his health permitted. Russ brought with him the deer that he successfully harvested in October 2005 This display case houses the 1930 photo of Roy Case and the first bow-killed deer in the State of Wisconsin. The photo was a featured attraction enjoyed by all. The display case was made by Lloyd Lechner and donated to the museum
