Supporting the Sport

More than 70 years of accomplishments

The long open seasons for bowhunting in Wisconsin and liberal regulations have been obtained through many, many years of working with our DNR and our legislature. Bowhunters did not always have it this good. It would be wise for the newer bowhunters to fully realize the vital importance of supporting the Wisconsin Bowhunters Association, for only with our organized efforts in the form of a strong, statewide organization can individual bowhunters defend their sport.WBH has supported many conservation organizations such as: Wildlife Legislative Fund of America, Milwaukee County Conservation Alliance, AWARE, A.A.C. (American Archery Council), Northern Environmental Council, Wisconsin Hunter Education Instructor Association, and the Wisconsin Sportswomen's Club. WBH works to protect all hunting, fishing, and trapping.
*Gone from a five-day, buck-only season in two counties of the state in 1934, to our 85-day bowhunting for either sex deer*1942: the first bear season with bow and arrow*1943: the first open season for does or bucks*1951: Repealed a 1945 law that required a bowhunter to have 50% of his clothing in RED*1952: Repealed a 1947 law against having a strung bow in an automobile; replaced with the law allowing a strung bow within a case to be carried in an automobile*1953: December bow season was established*1965: Separate bow & arrow license implemented*1971: Portable Tree Stand use legalized in Wisconsin*1989: Obtained an additional 15 minutes hunting time*1989: No longer had to case bows until returned to vehicle* 1990: Bonus tags available to bowhunters in deer management units substantially over goal and under-subscribed by gun hunters choice applicants; Hunters Choice tags can be filled during archery season.*1991-1994: Supported Professor Ray Anderson's Black Bear study, which compared the health of a hunted vs. non-hunted bear population; This data will be valuable in defending bear hunting against unwarranted attacks.*1994: Legal to bowfish from a boat with motor running; If not bowfishing, bow must be in a case.*Since 1995: Sponsored participants in the Becoming an Outdoors Woman program*1997: Bowhunters able to hunt up until the Friday before the gun season in "T" zones (4 extra days)* 2005: Worked with other conservation groups to get a two year stay from Oct. T-zone hunts* 2007: Part of the CWD advisory board to make recommendations for future CWD management* 2008: Established an online user forum for the involvement and enjoyment of WBH members*2009: Part of both the DMU goal setting board and the EAB alternative board*2009: Provided testimony as part of the legislative process on deer management, which led to a revision of season structure including suspending EAB*2010: Provided testimony as part of the legislative process on overwinter goals, which led to the legislature rejecting the proposed goal in favor of a goal increase* 2010-present: Defends the sport of Bowhunting to improve the situation and conditions for Bowhunters statewide*Prior to and continuing past 2010: Monitors all threats to Bowhunting that may come as a result of legislation, spring hearings, outside interests, etc.

Scholarship

The Wisconsin Bowhunters Association participates in the scholarship program at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point by sponsoring a $500.00 scholarship to eligible students enrolled in the Natural Resources program. The scholarship is known as the Lyell Cowley Memorial Scholarship. WBH has supported the scholarship fund at Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton, Wisconsin. WBH has also sponsored high school students wishing to participate in the Natural Resources Careers Workshop that is part of a joint effort through the DNR and the University of Wisconsin.

The Annual Broadhead Shoot, the largest bowhunter shoot of its kind in the nation, the weekend AFTER Labor Day beginning at noon on Friday; opportunity to shoot under natural hunting conditions at life-sized deer and bear silhouettes.

Booster Membership

The Bowhunter Booster membership is available to clubs, businesses, and even individuals for an annual fee of $25.00. The Booster's name is listed in our magazine and receives a membership card large enough to display in a window. We urge our members to support those Booster members who support us.

From the President - Fall 2011

wouldn't include the rut. WBH has been working diligently and almost daily to keep this from happening and we need your help. A large and active membership is our best weapon, so we need your memberships and those of your bowhunting buddies, as well as vocal support when we negotiate with legislators, other organizations and the DNR. The other issue that has been on the front burner lately is deer management policy. Many of you have had to deal with depressed deer numbers in many parts of the state. I have attended several local and state meetings over the last few years where deer hunters, bowhunters and gun hunters alike, have been screaming to stop the practices that have got us here, particularly early antlerless hunts and earn-a-buck. Unfortunately not much changed until the new administration took over at the DNR early this year. Since then WBH has been involved in ongoing discussions on how to bring our deer herd back in the areas where the population has dwindled. The DNR finally took steps to eliminate earn-a-buck and T-Zone hunts in non-CWD areas, but only for this year. That's when Senator Terry Moulton and Representative Tom Tiffany stepped in and proposed legislation to make it permanent. Some conservation groups protested saying we still need these tools to control the deer herd. WBH testified in support of this legislation, because there are better tools and in our opinion, such distasteful options like earn-a-buck aren't acceptable to most hunters and if they keep screwing around with the seasons and driving away more and more hunters, we will lose the only real tool available to manage the deer herd: deer hunters. I hope you all have high hopes for the coming seasons. I know I do. As soon as I get back from a western hunt I plan to concentrate on a really nice buck I hunted last year that appears to still be in the area. Shoot straight and true! Mike Brust

Promoting, Protecting and Preserving bowhunting in Wisconsin has become a lot more complicated than it used to be. I started bowhunting a long time ago. I won't say how many years, but my first archery license was a Junior Bowhunter License (16 and under) that cost me the whopping sum of $1.00. At the time I was blissfully ignorant of everything that had been done to allow me to have that opportunity. As I continued I began to appreciate how special bowhunting was, and began doing what I could to make sure this amazing opportunity that I have been so blessed to enjoy was there for many future generations. While I have done this through several organizations, Wisconsin Bowhunters Association has always been a part of my adult life, and in my opinion is the very best organization in the country for promoting, protecting and preserving bowhunting for my grandchildren and yours.

Since the last issue there have been several developments affecting bowhunting in Wisconsin. There has been support expressed again that hunters over 55 should be allowed to hunt in the archery season with a crossbow, as if its the same weapon, or as if us over 55rs are somehow no longer capable of practicing or bowhunting effectively. I've had calls from several over-65 members that bought crossbows and assure me that modern crossbows are not anything like archery equipment, and crossbow hunting isn't anything like bowhunting. I had one gentleman tell me he shot his last two bucks at 68 and 73 yards with his crossbow and is going back to archery equipment because he is worried about what will happen to our archery season if more folks use crossbows in the archery season. I'm worried too. Because such a large percentage of bowhunters are already over 55, if they all take crossbows into the woods there will almost certainly be calls to legalize them for the remaining bowhunters to be fair, and more calls for a much shorter archery season, which probably
